A group of enthusiasts at the head of Naima Ebrok formed a folk-dance group Kajakas (Seagull in translation) in 1951. After hard work the group was renamed the ensemble Kajakas in 1964. Naima's work was continued by Eevi Killing in the middle of 1970s and since the year 1983 the choreographer's role was taken over by Rita Mändla.
Nowadays there are eight groups under Rita’s supervision: two mixed student groups, two grown-up mixed groups, womens' groups, young girls' group and the childrens' group. In the year 2009 there are 111 dancers in Kajakas, mainly from Pärnu and Pärnu County.
Throughout the years, the ensemble has introduced Estonian Folk-dances everywhere in Estonia and abroad. The festivals and concert-trips have taken the dancers not only to Europe but also to Africa, Canada, Brazil, Turkey and Udmurtia. There have been no provincial nor national folk-dance festivals in Estonia that Kajakas has not taken part in.
Kajakas brings together people, who believe in the strength of their wings and who dare to fly high.
